After starting his collegiate career at Fresno State, where he was named a Freshman All-American, Derrick Ward transfered to Ottawa University in Kansas for his final year of eligibility where he set NAIA single-season records with 2,061 rushing yards and 28 touchdowns. Ward was then drafted by the New York Jets in the 2004 NFL Draft, but was signed by the New York Giants after he was placed on the Jets' practice squad.
Despite seeing limited action as mainly a special teams player in his first several years with the Giants, Ward emerged as a viable rushing threat for the team in 2007 when he rushed for over 600 yards and 3 touchdowns in just 8 games. Helping to give the Giants one of the best running back groups in the NFL, Ward was a key member of the Giants team that upset the heavily favored and previously unbeaten New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.
