Doug Flutie capped an outstanding collegiate career at Boston College by winning the 1984 Heisman Trophy, leaving his school as the NCAA's all-time passing yardage leader with 10,579 yards. Flutie was a consensus All-American as a senior and earned Player of the Year honors from UPI, Kodak, Sporting News and Maxwell Club. As a senior, he completed 233 of 386 passes for 3,454 yards, 27 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
He had his most memorable moment of his Boston College career at Miami Nov. 23, 1984 when he threw 48-yard touchdown pass to Gerard Phelan as time expired to give Boston College 47-45 upset win over Canes.
After huge success in the CFL, Flutie moved on to the NFL with stints in Buffalo and San Diego where he often starred in backup roles and with occassional starts. Flutie then returned to the area of his college triumphs, having been signed as the New England Patriots backup quarterback. In his last game as a professional, Flutie was put into the game to attempt an extra kick where he converted a drop kick, the first such kick in the NFL since 1941.
