Mike Nugent was drafted by the New York Jets in the 2nd Round of the 2005 Draft, a pick that happened to be the Jets first. Nugent starred at Ohio St., earning 1st Team All-American honors as a sophomore and All Big Ten Conference honors his senior year. His consistent and cluth kicking helped Ohio St. win several games and his range from outside 50 yards made the Buckeyes offense dangerous at all times during a game. Nugent broke and set numerous kicking records at Ohio St., including a streak in which he hit 17 straight field goals at the Horseshoe.
After a year in which the Jets endured kicking inconsistency and heartbreak, Nugent's consistency and ability to perform in the clutch prompted the Jets to select him with such an early choice in the draft. Nugent responded, performing well in the preseason and earning the starting place kicking job for the N.Y. Jets. He has continued to kick well for the Jets throughout his tenure with the team.
