| A valuable utility player, Miguel Cairo broke into the Majors in 1996 as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays. After short stints with the Blue Jays and Chicago Cubs, Cairo joined the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 1998 where he would become the starting 2nd baseman for three years. In addition to providing solid defense, Cairo collected over 300 hits during his stay with the Devil Rays and was a consistent contributor on a young and struggling team.
Cairo was signed by the New York Yankees in 2004 and posted perhaps his best season to date, batting .292 with over 100 hits and 42 RBI. After leaving to play for the New York Mets for a year, Cairo returned to the Yankees in 2006 where he would show his versatility, starting games at 2nd, 3rd, 1st, shortstop, and even left field. A consummate team player, he has become a valuable player for the Yankees, willing and able to play multiple positions and able to contribute while doing so.
