His hard working style prompted Hall-of-Fame Yankee pitcher Whitey Ford to label him "Charlie Hustle," a nickname that Pete Rose would be known by for the rest of his career. He hit .273 in his rookie season and played in nearly every game. He was rewarded for his efforts that season and was named National League Rookie of the Year in 1963.
Rose's playing flourished from 1965 to 1973. He consistently batted over .300 and Pete was an important component to the "Big Red Machine" that dominated the National League in the 1970's. He won two World Series championships with the Cincinnati Reds and one more with the Philadelphia Phillies. He was the 1973 NL MVP and the 1975 World Series MVP.
He was a 17 time All Star. Pete holds the Major League Baseball record in hits totaling an amazing 4,256 hits by the time of his retirement earning him the title of "Hit King". He is the all time leader in games played (3,562), At bats (14,053), singles (3,215), and times on base (5,929).
