Led by goalie Jim Craig, the 1980 U. S. Hockey Team won the Gold Medal at the Olympic Games in Lake Placid after defeating the heavily favored Soviets. Craig's 39 saves kept the team in the semi-final game against Russia, which finally turned into a 4-3 U. S. victory on two third-period goals, sealing a victory in what has become enshrined in American history as one of the greatest sports upsets ever.
The U.S. team would then finish its unprecedented run by taking home the gold medal.
