| A deadly combination of power hitting and defensive prowess made Mike Schmidt one of the best 3rd basemen of all time. This was evidenced by his 548 career HRs and his 10 Gold Gloves. Schmidt was a 12-time All-Star and 3-time National League MVP. He helped lead the Philadelphia Phillies to back to back World Series in 1980 and 1981, the former of which they won against the Kansas City Royals, and in which he earned WS MVP honors. All these accolades led to Schmidt being named as the ôSporting Newsö Player of the Decade for the 1980s. He was elected as a first ballot Hall of Famer in 1995.
