A 3-time All-Star, Orel Hershiser spent the majority of his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers, establishing himself as one of the best pithchers in the league during the late 80's and early 90's. Although he originally began his career with the Dodgers as a relief pither, the team quickly realized his staring potential and Hershiser became a full-time pitcher in 1985, compiling a 19-3 record with a 2.03 ERA.
After earning his first All-Star appearance in 1987, Hershiser put together his best year in the majors in 1988, not to mention one of the best pitching years of all time. He won a Gold Glove and led the league in wins (23), innings (267), and complete games (15), and finished the season with an astounding and record-setting 59 consecutive scoreless innings pitched. With a 23-8 record to go along with his 2.26 ERA, Hershiser was unanimously selected as the NL Cy Young winner.
His success did not end in the regular season. During the 1988 NLCS, Hershiser started Games 1 and 3, recorded a save in Game 4 and then pithched a complete game shutout in the decisive Game 7, earning NLCS MVP Honors. He then put an exclamation point on his historic season by recording complete game shutout victories in Games 2 and 5 of the World Series and was named the World Series MVP, becoming the only player to receive the Cy Young award, the Championship Series MVP award, and the World Series MVP award in the same season.
