Before becoming a 1st Rd. pick of the New York Jets in the 2000 NFL Draft, Pennington starred for Marshall University where he led his team to 4 Mid-American Conference titles, setting school records in several passing categories along the way. After waiting patiently as a backup in his first two seasons, Pennington became the starter in 2002 and led the Jets to the AFC East title for the first time since 1998 and a playoff birth.
He suffered a season ending injury in the 2003 preseason, but came back in 2004 to once again lead the Jets to the playoffs and a first round upset of the San Diego Chargers. Pennington is known for his precise accuracy and consistently ranks among league leaders in passer rating.
