| A left-handed first baseman with the St. Louis Cardinals and New York Mets, Keith Hernandez was one of the premier first baseman in the Majors throughout the 1980's. An excellent hitter with a good batting eye, he was also a very good defensive player, as evidenced by his 11 Gold Gloves. In perhaps his best all-around year, Hernandez tied with Willie Stargell of the Pittsburgh Pirates for the 1979 NL Most Valuable Player Award when he led the league in hitting at .344, in runs scored with 116, and in doubles with 48.
Despite his success and accolades in St. Louis, including playing a key role in the Cardinals' 1982 World Series Championship, Hernandez was traded to the New York Mets during the 1983 season and remained with them through 1989. He was a key member of the Mets improbable 1986 World Series Championship team, leading the league in walks with 94 that year. A 5-time All Star, Hernandez also hit an MLB Record 24 Game-Winning RBIs in 1985 and had 129 such RBIs in his career.
Herndez retired after the 1990 season, finishing with a career average of .296, with 2,182 hits, including 426 doubles, 60 triples, and 162 home runs, to go along with 1,124 runs scored and 1,071 RBI. He was inducted into the New York Mets Hall of Fame in 1997.
