| After a standout college career at Conference USA's Charlotte, where he was named the Conference Pitcher of the Year in 2001, John Maine was selected in the 6th round of the 2002 Draft by the Baltimore Orioles. Maine was considered one of the top prospects in the Orioles' farm system and made his Major League Debut in 2004. After bouncing back and forth between the minors and the big leagues, Maine was traded to the New York Mets before the beginning of the 2006 season.
Maine became a starter in the Mets' rotation during his first year with the team and was a welcomed surprise throughout the year. At one point, Maine went 26 straight innings without giving up a run, setting a Mets franchise rookie record in the process. He would finish the season with a 6-5 record and 3.60 ERA and played a key role in the Playoffs, even getting the start in their opening game vs. the Dodgers.
Maine has since displayed his first year with the team was not a fluke and has become a fixture in the team's starting rotation. Following a stellar start to the 2007 season, including an April where he went 4-0 with a 1.35 ERA, Maine has become a consistent and at times dominant starter and has established himself as one of the premier right handed pitches in the National League.
