| A touted linebacking prospect coming out of high school, Omar Gaither lived up to the billing at the University of Tennessee, becoming a standout player on the Volunteers stout defense. Gaither saw limited time in his first two years with the team, but became the starting outside linebacker his junior year and did not disappoint. Over his final two years, Gaither recorded over 120 tackles, 20 of which were for losses, and 6 sacks, earning 2nd Team All-SEC Honors his senior year.
Attracted by his play-making ability and aggressive play in college, the Philadelphia Eagles selected Gaither in the 5th Round of the 2006 NFL Draft. He immediately impressed coaches with his nose for the ball and ability to pick up the system and developed into a key contributor on special teams, while also seeing significant time in certain defensive packages. Gaither was then inserted into the starting line-up shortly following the halfway mark of the season and instantly became a play-making, productive piece of an improved Eagles defense that led them to an improbable NFC East Divisional Championship.
Prior to the 2007 season, following the departure of Jeremiah Trotter, Gaither was named the Eagles' starting MLB and is being counted on to lead a revamped Eagles defense looking to remain among the NFL's elite.
