Larry Johnson burst onto the national scene as a senior at Penn State University when he rushed for a nation leading 2,087 yards on 271 carries, an amazing 7.7 yards per carry. He racked up 20 touchdowns in the process and became just the ninth player in NCAA Division I history and the first in Big Ten annals to top the 2,000-yard rushing plateau, shattering the Penn State school single-season rushing record of 1,567 yards set by Lydell Mitchell in ‘71.
His incredibly performance resulted in Johson taking home the Doak Walker Award as the nation’s top running back, as well as the Walter Camp and Maxwell Club Player of the Year Awards. His first team All-American performance vaulted him into the 1st Round of the 2003 NFL Draft where he was taken by the Kansas City Chiefs with the 27th overall pick.
After spending time learning under Pro Bowl running back Priest Holmes, Johnson got his chance to shine in 2005 and took full advantage. LJ ran for at least 100 yards in the Chiefs' last 9 games of the season, including 2 200+ yard efforts, to finish with an astounding 1,750 yards, despite starting in only about half of the team's games.
Johnson also showed a nose for the endzone, striking paydirt 20 times. Following his brilliant effort to end the season, he was named the starter for 2006 and looks to continue to prove that he is among the league's elite running backs.
