In his first season in the NHL, Antero Niittymaki quickly showed that he belonged. After leading the Philadelphia Flyers AHL team, the Philadelphia Phantoms, to the Calder Cup Championship in 2005, Niittymaki got the call up to the Flyers and began to see significant time after Robert Esche was stricken with an injury. Niittymaki proved to be nothing less than spectacular, helping to lead the Flyers to the top of the standings, including an outstanding performance throughout the Flyers' record-breaking road trip.
With an impressive GAA at under 3.00 and a save percentage that hovered around .900, Niittymaki earned himself a place on Finland's 2006 Olympic Team. His stellar performance throughout the Olympic Games earned him the tournament's MVP and he played a key role in helping the Finn's earn the silver medal.
Having acquired Martin Biron at the end of the 2007 season, Niittymaki has teamed with the new goalie to give the Flyers one of the league's top goalie tandems and has continued to be an outstanding backstop in net for the team.
