An excellent player in his own regard, Charlie Manuel was one of the most productive and popular major league baseball players in Japan long before becoming a Manager back in the states. Known as The Red Devil, Manuel was a prolific hitter, finishing his playing time in Japan with a .303 career average, 189 home runs and 491 RBI. Upon his return to the U.S., Manuel began his coaching career as a minor league manager for both the Minnesota Twins and Cleveland Indians before becoming the big league Manager for the Indians from 2000-02. He then joined the Philadelphia Phillies organization, eventually becoming the team's manager in 2005. Known as being a player's manager and an excellent hitting instructor, Manuel meshed well with the team and led them back to the playoffs in 2007 after a prolonged absence. The following year, Manuel forever left his mark in Phillies' franchise history by leading his team to the World Series Championship, the first such championship for the franchise since 1980.
