A lanky left-hander with precise command and a deceptive change-up, J.A. Happ was a star at Northwestern University, earning All-Big 10 Honors his freshman, sophomore, and junior seasons. Happ then elected to forego his senior season and was drafted in the 3rd Round of the 2004 MLB Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies. He would go on to spend several successful seasons in the Minors and made his Major League debut for the Phillies in 2007, where he made one spot start for the team following a rash of injuries. In the midst of a similar situation in 2008, Happ was once again called up and would go 1-0 in his four starts, while posting an overall 3.70 ERA in eight appearances. Having impressed the coaching staff, Happ was named to the postseason roster as a reliever and would play a role in helping the Phillies to win the 2008 World Series. Happ used his promising 2008 season along with the 2009 spring training season to further cement his status as a quality pitcher and has developed into one of the Phillies' most consistent and successful starters.
